More Than The Sum Of Parts
Perhaps it is their appealing shape, the graceful way they move through the water, or maybe it is the fact that ring net boats worked so closely with nature, that has encouraged abiding and positive memories in those who worked with them. These boats are more than the sum of parts, nothing was added to their design that was not essential for their purpose; yet they exude some extended quality. The passionate reaction they arouse in all those involved with them engages us on an emotional level.
There is a lot of history surrounding these lovely old boats; they all have a story to tell. Photographs tend to show them during peaceful times, resting in quiet harbours or on lonely lochs. However, the better part of their time was spent in the pursuit of herring, usually at night. Dynamic boats working in dynamic seas; ring netters shot their nets around our coast, and brought herring to our tables.
